Southern Indiana Championships
February 22–23 in Washington County
Many more details will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks about the upcoming HBCA/FCA basketball tournament for boys and girls in grades 2-8. The tournament will be called the Southern Indiana Championships and will be hosted by Salem, West Washington, and Eastern Pekin High Schools in Washington County, smack dab in the middle of the HBCA. The event will raise money for the HBCA scholarship foundation and FCA ministries in southern Indiana. Mark the dates and share information with all coaches in your feeder programs.
One of the best things about the tournament is that we will have a Sunday morning devotional at Salem HS prior to games getting started. Because teams, coaches and families will be away from home we are going to give them this time to come in and have some prayer, devotional, and message time with members of the FCA staff.
Coaches Insider Drills and Videos
Reilly Drill
Watch as Coach Darian DeVries of Dayton explains, and players demonstrate the Reilly Defending the Post Drill. The defender can use their forearm while the offensive player's back is to the basket. The offensive player takes two power dribbles and spins to the basket while the defender walls him up staying vertical.

Message from Coach Thompson
Team, Me
This week I was reminded of something my JH basketball coach, Rick Hudson, reinforced to us by shirts we wore in practice that said "TEAM, me" on them. In this week's devotional "Big God, Little Me" we are reminded that we serve an awesome God and it's easy to think about how big God is, but it's even harder to allow him to reign over all we do. In other words, it's difficult to let go and let God be in control, especially for us as coaches. Just as Coach Hudson reminded us with our practice shirts that the TEAM is bigger than the individual, the truly important thing to understand is that everything that happens to the team is much more important than anything that happens to us as individuals. My prayer for you this week is that you can allow God to be in complete control, reduce your stress and anxieties, and realize that your service to Him is what truly matters as a Christian mentor to those you touch through FCA.

Big God, Little Me
Ready
“Neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.” — Acts 17:25
Set
Coaches are familiar with famous slogans. We put them on T-shirts and in pictures or paint them on walls to try to motivate our athletes. One famous slogan is, “TEAM, me.” “Team” is capitalized because that’s where everyone’s focus should be. “Me” is in lower case to show that individual goals are secondary to the team goals.
A great slogan for the Christian life could be, “God, me.” It’s easy to understand the concept of a big God because we all know that He is bigger than we are. The hard part is allowing Him to reign over all we do. Because most coaches are competitors and problem solvers, we feel the need to do everything we can for our programs. We put so much pressure on ourselves to have a great program that we sometimes lose perspective and the ability to have fun.
Christians can also feel this way. We put pressure on ourselves to live a perfect life and do all these Christian “things” because we think that’s what it’s about. We get so busy and tired that we lose the joy of knowing Jesus. But God wants our relationship with Him to be a joy, not a burden. Acts 17:25 says that He will give us everything we really need (not necessarily what we want!). In fact, He already has in the person and sacrifice of Jesus Christ! Why, then, do many of us feel like we have to perform all these spiritual deeds when all God wants for us is to believe and trust Him each day? If we’ll focus more on knowing Him and less on doing, we’ll experience the presence of God walking beside us in all we do! Our hearts will be redirected to our real source of joy, and our lives—not a slogan—will reflect that to others!

1. What are things you feel you “need” to do for Christ?
2. How can the joy of Jesus affect your coaching?
3. What prevents you from relaxing in God’s presence?

Overtime
Lord, quiet my heart and mind from the busyness of life so that I hear Your voice today and sense Your presence. Amen.
