Competitive Greatness - The Grind
This week, I wanted to share part of my journal/devotional with you. This is taken from Day 11 on Competitive Greatness - The Grind. I hope you enjoy.
Hebrews 12:11-13 “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.”
Daily Relationship Challenge: Take two minutes to tell your spouse how you appreciate what they do in their professional life. For example: “You know I admire how you completed that project ahead of time.”
Do you truly embrace the grind as a coach. The only way that you are going to be great at what you do is to embrace the grind. Sure there are going to be days where you “don’t feel like it.” Today’s verse reminds us that disciplining ourselves may not be pleasant. Have you ever wondered what separates the major league baseball Player A who signs a ten year contract extension from PLAYER B who just didn’t quite make it? I know you are saying, “God given ability.” That could be a factor, but most of the time it is the way they embrace the grind.
One of my favorite athletic quotes comes from Nick Saban. Saban was referring to the weight room, but you can really apply this to anything in athletics or life. “Everybody wants to be the beast, but not everybody wants to do what beasts do.” If you want to be truly great in all that you do - your faith; your family; and your profession, then you have to embrace the grind.
There are some things that we don’t enjoy doing as a coach. You might not love planning practice. You might not love professional development. You might not love breaking down countless hours of film.. You might not love getting up 30 minutes earlier each day to read your devotion or get a workout in. It is the extra that we do that separates us. It is the extra work that we do that will make us a beast.
Lots of coaches will tell their teams that the pain we endure today will produce joy tomorrow. Even though players are gutted at the end of practices or the end of the games, you will always try to convince them that they have one more “run” left in them that other teams don’t.. It’s unpleasant while training but with the focus on tomorrow, it is easier to endure the moment. Yes, it is painful, but it also yields results later for those “who have been trained by it.”
What is an area of your coaching where you might cut corners?
What short term effect do you think this has on your team?
What long term effects might this have on your program?
What is holding you back from embracing the grind in this area?
